Mama Mia Burgers with Italian Tomato Relish

Pairs well with:

Gewurztraminer

Hard to pronounce yet easy to drink, this wine combines lychee fruit and white peach flavors with a hint of spice.

Ingredients

2 lbs. ground chuck
1/3 lb. Italian sausage
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 cup fresh white onion, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 oz. sun-dried tomatoes
1/2 cup ripe olive slices
1/2 cup pimento olives
1 tablespoon fresh oregano
1 tablespoon fresh basil
1/2 cup red bell pepper, in pieces
1/3 cup Italian dressing
6 large white hamburger buns
6 butter or Boston lettuce leaves

Instructions

Preheat gas grill to medium high.

Combine beef, sausage, garlic, onion and salt in large bowl. Handle as little as possible to avoid compaction. Divide in six portions and gently form patties to fit buns.

To make relish: Combine sun-dried tomatoes, olives, herbs and pepper pieces in food processor. Process until finely ground. Add Italian dressing. Blend well.

When grill is ready, brush the grill rack with oil. Place the burgers on the grill and cook 4 to 5 minutes on each side or to the desired degree of doneness. During the last few minutes place bun halves, cut side down, on grill to brown lightly.

Place a lettuce leaf and burger on each bun bottom. Top with relish and cover with bun tops. Secure with frilled toothpicks. Serve extra relish in side dish.
