Tasty Mediterranean burgers with Tzatziki sauce

Ingredients

TZATZIKI SAUCE
1 container (16 ounces) plain yogurt
1/2 English (seedless) cucumber, peeled and finely chopped.
1/1-2 teaspoons salt
1 garlic clove, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped dill
BURGER INGREDIENTS
1/2 chopped onion
3 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon fresh mint, finely chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh oregano, finely chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons milk (whole milk preferred)
1 teaspoon ground pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup plain bread crumbs
2 pounds ground beef
6 small pita bread halfed horizontally
sliced tomato
3 cups chopped romaine lettuce

 

Instructions

Combine Tzatziki sauce ingredients in a bowl, cover and let sit for 1 hour. place onion, garlic, mint, parsley, oregano, milk, pepper and salt in a food processor. Puree until smooth. place bread crumbs and beef in a bowl. Add the onion mixture and mix thoroughly. Portion into 6 patties. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill with a cover, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. When the grill is ready, brush the grill rack with vegetable oil. Place the patties on the rack, cover, and cook, turning once, until done to preference, 5 to 7 minutes on each side for medium. To assemble the burgers, place a patty in between the pita bread and top with 1 slice tomato and 1/2 cup of romaine lettuce, top with 1 tablespoon of Tzatziki sauce and serve. Makes 6 burgers
